“Wrought by Polly Nickerson Crowell Aged 9 years / Dennis January the 15th. day year 1835”

“Truth like a garment let / us wear and always keep it clean And fair And never / let it once be told that truth by us was ever sold.”

The Crowells and the Nickersons were early settlers of the county of Barnstable, MA. The families intermarried thru the generations. This sampler is attributed to Polly Crowell, the youngest of 3 children born to Capt. Thomas Crowell and Lurana “Lanie” S. Chase on Jan. 15, 1826, in Dennis, Barnstable, MA. Capt. Thomas Crowell died when Polly was 5 years old. Lurana married Benjamin Crowell (not a direct relation to Thomas) shortly after, in that same year. Lurana married her third husband, Nymphus Stacy, at some point after 1837. Polly dies at the young age of 17. I have been unable to verify the middle name. Further Crowell genealogy is included.

Worked in 6 colors of silk thread on a linen ground in cross, eyelet, chain, and hem stitches. Polly included 3 registers of uppercase, 1 lowercase, and 1 uppercase cursive. The lower band features a bevy of baskets of fruit, birds, and trees, with verse surrounded by 4 central baskets: “Let religion and virtue be the guide of thy life / An innocence accompany all thy diversions.”

"The Crowell family in North Dennis, Barnstable, MA, is descended from John Crow, who came, it is said, from Wales in 1636, to Charlestown, where he and his wife, Elishua, joined the church. All the first settlers selected spots for their homes adjacent to good springs of water. The brook that flows through the village of North Dennis had numerous fine flowing springs to supply the need of the first comers. John Crow built his home north of the present village. His land, much of which is still owned by his descendants, was east of Indian Fields.
