ELIZABETH VOORHIES Sampler, Hunterdon County, NJ, c. 1830s
Elizabeth Voorhies worked her wonderful verse sampler at the age of 11 years
"On fancies wing let Genius soar / While you ingenius arts explore / Let fair Creation lead the way / And silk and needle homage pay / But let your mind ascent to God / Inquire and tread the heavenly road / Then you will shine when all creation dies / And fill a glorious station in the skies"
Worked in cross, eyelet, chain, and holbein stitches.
Attributed to Elizabeth L. Wyckoff’s Redington School
Dan and Marty Campanelli, dear friend's of Glee's, wrote the definitive guide: Sampling of Hunterdon County Needlework: the Motifs, the Makers & their Stories
