The
Female Normal and High School
, opened in 1869 to prepare young women
to become teachers. Renamed
Hunter College
in 1914, it was the first
NYC institution to offer free public higher education to women
It is the first institution to offer free public higher education for girls in NYC.
The school opens over a carriage shop with a student body of 1,000 girls with an average age of 14. A year later, it is renamed the Normal College of the City of NY.
"Building upon the principles of the Free Academy, the Normal College is
open to all women, regardless of race, religion or ethnic background.
By the turn of the century, its curriculum will expand beyond training
for teaching careers, enabling women to earn bachelor’s degrees"
In 1914, the institution was renamed
Hunter College
, after the school’s
first president, Irish immigrant Thomas Hunter.
