Gilt sparrow hemming / sewing bird, stamped A. GEROULD & CO. PATENT beneath the tail. Steel C-clamp with heart shaped thumbscrew and a pincushion under the beak. It was patented by Allen Gerould in Middletown, CT, in 1853.
This type of sewing bird is called a "sub-bill grasper". By pressing on the tail, the bird's head is raised so that material may be held between the beak and the cup.
Condition:
VERY GOOD
Wear appropriate to age. Traces of gilding.
Velvet has worn away from pincushion surface.
No dents, splits, or repairs.
