"Sarah W. Warner / Williamsburg Aged / 9 Years July 4 1829"

"In memory of Mrs. Lucinda S / Warner, wife of Mr. Orren Warner / Who died Nov. the 15 1824 Aged 33"

Sarah W. Warner was a 9-year old school girl when she worked this impressive memorial tribute to her mother. Sarah was the 2nd of three children born to Orrin Warner and Lucinda Starks, on Apr 8, 1820, in Palmyra, Wayne, NY. Her mother died when Sarah was age 4. Her father, not long after, married Delia McLouth. Orrin and Delia had 9 children, 5 of which would die as young children.

Perhaps while Orrin Warner was busy as a new husband, and new father to additional children, he chose to place Sarah with an aunt or uncle in Williamsburg, Hampshire, MA. Orrin lived in Palmyra, NY from 1817 until his death in 1863. He had been born in Cummington, Hampshire, MA to Moses Warner and Mary "Molly" Ward. The 3rd of 8 children born to Moses Warner during his 3 marriages. One of Orrin's 7 siblings probably offered to take their widow brother's young child for a time. The WARNERS were early settlers of Hardwick and Cummington, MA.

Sarah remained in the neighboring town of Cummington, Hampshire, MA, marrying John Clark Reed on Jan 16, 1851. John was a farmer, and together, they had 5 children.

Worked in 8 colors of silk thread on a linen ground in 3 alphabetical and numerical registers. Featuring architectural structures of Williamsburg, including a 3-story home and 4-story church. Her inscriptions are flanked by bowls of fruit, baskets, birds, and botanicals.

"A considerable stream passes through this town, and unites with the Connecticut at Northampton, affording good water-power for manufacturing purposes. The following is a southern view of the central part of Williamsburg. The Methodist church recently erected is seen on the left; the Congregational church is seen on the right, southerly of which is the bridge over the mill stream passing through the village.

The Williamsburg woollen linen and cotton manufactory was incorporated in 1825, with a capital of $250,000. In 1837, there were 3 woollen mills: 42,150 yards of cloth were manufactured."
