18th c. ENGLISH Miniature Sampler
A very fine late 18th c. English miniature sampler worked in silk on wool, with slate blue selvedges at top and bottom. Sides are hemmed. Worked in 11 colors of cross, straight, satin, and tent stitches. Unsigned and undated, it features traditional motifs mirrored thru out the bottom register. Stylized flower meander and honeysuckle meander band. Bottom register features motifs of fruit baskets, flower pots, birds, insects, crowns, and dogs. Insects and butterfly flying around central potted tulip-like plant. Uncommon vertical height in relation to its narrow width.

CONDITION:
Some stitch loss in lower right basket. Small holes around edges, near letter "H", and near lower right basket. Original period gilt frame has surface wear and loss to gesso at corners. Brown paper covering back. Not conservation mounted.
