Elegant trapunto hand quilted oval pounce pad with tatted edging. This is a rare and elegant version of a simple tool for transferring a stencil to a fabric for hand embroidery.
Powdered chalk is held in the soft fabric bag, and then the bag is padded up and down over the perforated paper pattern or quilt stencil to transfer the design through the holes to the material underneath.
A powder of juniper gum and pipe clay was traditionally used in preparying material for marking designs from perforated patterns. Later special "pounce" powder, chalk, or talc was used for tracing patterns on cloth.
