Eva P. Norris Schoolgirl Sewing Sample Book - Medford, MA, 1893
Eva Perry Norris' 1893 sewing sample book, age 13. Includes samples on fell, running, over casting, French dressmaker's fell, gusset, blind, eyelets, Crow's Toes, hose darning, buttonholes with a cord, patching, wool darning, half back, hem, feather, back, cross, chain, and etching stitching.
The Norris family moved often as a young family. Although Eva was born in Sioux City, IA , the family traveled back and forth between Sioux City and Marshall, MI. Eva's maternal grandparents lived in Franklin, Lenawee, MI during the 1880s. Between 1888 - 1898, the family traveled back and forth from Marshall, MI to Medford, MA. Charles Norris was originally from Fremont, NH, an hour north of Medford. The 1890 census records were lost to fire, so it is harder to track the family during those years. Marshall, MI newspaper records for 1897, report Mrs. Norris visiting with her daughter from Boston, MA. By 1900, Charles Norris is employed as RR conductor in Medford. By the age of 67 in 1920, Eva's father is listed as a foreman at a local Medford cotton mill.
