19th c. Letter Containing Knitted Mitten Ephemera - Voluntown, New London, CT
"You have got the (mitten) Sir at last."
This little missive was addressed to Mr. Henry Crandall, Voluntown, CT. Sent from Preston, CT on March 12th. The envelope is quite small at 3" x 5".
Henry Crandall was born November 30, 1829, Voluntown, New London, CT. One of four children born to Ira Kinne Crandall and Zilpha Cole. He married Julia Sophronia Babcock in 1854. Together they had two daughters, Florence and Frances Anna. Henry was a descendant of Elder John Crandall of Rhode Island. He served as a sergeant in the 1st Regiment Rhode Island Light Artillery in 1861.
Too tiny and snug to be an infant mitten, the mitten may have belonged to a doll belonging to the daughters.
Will be charming framed. Includes genealogy.
