19th c. Miniature Gift Pocket Sampler in Red Box
Charming 19th c. pocket sampler tucked into a round cardboard box. This small piece is actually painted onto a fine gauze ground. Using the natural grid of the warp and weft, the young woman crafted her message in the interstices between threads. The gauze is mounted on a cream silk ground, and decoratively hemmed around the border.
" A / gift from thy / daughter / PP to JP"
The round box is decorated with embossed red paper on one side, and includes a handwritten message on the interior: "through earthly / businefs / bear a heaven-ward / mind".

Box: 2.2" x .75"
