Early 19th c. silk on linen placket sampler. White work square with a decorative faggoted hem. Includes four inset squares, six buttonholes, and six hollie point placket cuts. Central double bird and berry wreath cartouche embroidered in cross stitch dated 1806 and IEST. This is a beautiful example of a practice sampler for garment openings, worked with fine attention to the needle lace.
Placket samplers allowed a young girl to demonstrate her proficiency at darning, hemming, buttonholes, plackets and needle lace. These were practical skills for making and repairing household garments and textiles.
