19th c. Miniature Gift Pocket Watch Verse Sampler
Remarkable early 19th c. pocket sampler baskets of fruit, four birds, and two hearts, with central "JESUS WEPT". Worked on a fine 48ct linen gauze ground. Decoratively hemmed with a double chain stitch border. The sampler is conservation mounted on a natural raw linen ground.
Pocket watch samplers offered protection to the inner watch gears, providing cushioning against movement. Paper versions with advertisements were common at the time, but a handmade token of affection was a treasured keepsake.
Worked in a lagoon blue, carmine red, gold, and hunter green colored silk on a natural ground.
