Born in Philadelphia, Mary Anna Longstreth (1811-1884) began her schooling at 2 years old, "according to the strictest traditions of the Society of Friends."
At 13, Longstreth was already instructing her younger sisters in Latin.
This ledger is an unusual artifact in that it was a dedicated business business ledger for her father. Mary Anna maintained the transactions for her father's accounts, and used other portions of the large sized ledger for writing Quaker verse, and for rendering embroidery designs.
