Elizabeth Cromwell Sampler, Bronx, NY, c. 1837
Elizabeth Cromwell was born January 30, 1829, to William Cromwell and Carolyn Underhill.
William Cromwell (1800-1871), was a farmer in Monroe, Orange Co., NY, who also kept a dry goods store in New York City. He was the son of James Cromwell (1752-1828) and Charlotte Hunt (1762-1839).
Around 1770, Elizabeth’s grandfather, James Cromwell (a descendant of the first settler in America) purchased a mill adjacent to a creek. The nearby family house survived into the early 20th c., located at 165th St and Jerome Ave. The photos from the Museum of the City of New York show the Cromwell House circa 1910.
"James purchased this house around 1770 which included a mill on what became known as Cromwell Creek. It was still standing in 1910 when this photo was taken. Cromwell Creek today would run right through Yankee Stadium"
A rare early photo from 1855 shows James Cromwell’s family. In 1840, Elizabeth died at the young age of 11, otherwise she would be included in this early family portrait.

In addition to these family photos, a letter written by Caroline to her husband William, describes the summer of 1834 during a cholera epidemic in NYC. “Mary & Eliza & myself are very well and hearty.” Caroline mentions the illness of their daughter, Caroline Ann Cromwell, then only a year old. Caroline Underhill died 18 months after the birth of stillborn baby. (source: Spared&Shared)
