LOIS TILLSON, attr. Plymouth, MA, 1760
Lois Tillson worked this charming sampler in 1760. Featuring a house with 7 windows and 2 end chimneys. Two ladies (one with a parasol) are see strolling, and a young girl is feeding a dog.
Worked in 7 colors of silk thread on a linen ground in cross, stem, gobelin, satin, hem, oriental, eyelet, brick, and rice stitches.

Included in New England Samplers to 1840, p. 15, fig. 15.
Despite efforts to identify Lois and the Tillson family thru records, her identity remains a mystery. Mom made extensive efforts thru gravestone records to see if further information would present itself.
The Tillsons were early English settlers of Plymouth. This sampler is attributed to Plymouth County, MA.

Lower right ground has 4 small holes and staining. Spot at "learning" and after letter "F" in first row. Stitch loss on the letter "w" in third verse line. Sampler is NOT conservation mounted. Remains sewn to original bristol board.
