19th c. Flax Hatchel Oak & Forged Iron Carding Tool Primitive Hetchel Hackle

Board is constructed from a substantial 1.25" thick oak or walnut. This hatchel is finished with a unique forged iron outer bracing, apparently to reinforce the nail bed from further cracks. Once the flax plants were harvested, a series of specialized tools were implemented to separate the fibers from the plant in order to spin the fibers into linen thread.
