19th c. Knitting Roll Sampler Breirol
Early 19th c. knitting roll sampler or "breirol". This sampler features 51 "recipes" or patterns, worked in a gauge of 20 stitches per inch!! A beautiful collection of patterns that would traditionally be rolled up for storage between the addition of patterns. Either German or Dutch. Finished with silk satin binding and paper backing to the lace. It is additionally mounted on black paper. There could possibly be a name on the back. I have not removed it from the mounting paper. An exceptional historic reference "book" for knitted lace patterns. Similar pieces in the permanent collections of the V&A, The Met, Cooper-Hewitt, and Boston MFA.
